Blue Space Blues has certain melancholy. It was composed during the summer of 2012 and put together in August the same year. I guess it reflects the shortness of the Finnish summer.

The song is pretty progressive, the key and time signature changing all the time. It starts easy, goes on to a 7/8 rhythmical part, an almost classical piano interlude, a suspenseful guitar section and a fateful ending.

I appreciate the meticulousness of my younger self. Every instrument part is carefully decided. I remember creating a visual map of the song to make sure that all frequency bands are equally represented in the arrangement. This is the first time I intentionally minimized the amount of stereo tracks. The piano and drums are the only stereo tracks, everything else is in mono. This creates air for each instrument.

There are some cool reverse effects and other experimental stuff. For example, there’s a chromatic part (3:01–3:04) that goes up and down at the same time from F# to C. There are also two metric modulations that are carefully calculated. One nice detail is a doubled acoustic guitar harmony during one part (4:44–5:15) that’s mixed so quiet it can’t be heard, but it’s still there, believe me!

By the way, the song is an utter theft! I’ve stolen bits and pieces from Bach, Kitaro, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Alan Parsons Project, Kansas, Liquid Tension Experiment, and even the Finnish pop band Haloo Helsinki! Can you spot them all?
