about

The Edge was composed in late 2012 for Ilomantsi Male Choir’s CD. It’s the only piano solo piece on Starting Out.

This is actually the third recording of the song. The first one was recorded on someone else’s piano and I wasn’t happy with the sound quality. The second version was too rushed. The third one was recorded in my home studio in June 2014, and that’s when I finally got it right.

The Edge has some very long sustained notes that create interesting harmonies. The mood is fateful, almost ominous. It’s one of those songs that kind of compose themselves. The song tells where it needs to go, what notes should be played next. It’s like life: when you observe it delicately, it tells you what to do.

Someone said that The Edge is almost like a reflection of my personality and that I should continue in that direction. Personality is something that can be lost so easily in the stream of life. I guess making honest music is a way to keep it on the surface.
